Kushiro

Kushiro (kshē`rō), city (1990 pop. 205,640), SE Hokkaido, Japan, on the Pacific Ocean. The main port of E Hokkaido and the island's only ice-free trading port, it exports timber, fish, and coal. Kushiro is also a major base for fishermen. The city is the center of the huge Kushiro coal field, which extends far out to sea; mining is carried on in the sea. Industrialization has made Kushiro important in the production of marine products, dairy products, lumber, paper, pulp, and fertilizer. The city is traversed by the Kushiro River.
Kushiro 

a city and major commercial port for foreign trade in Japan, on the southeast shore of Hokkaido, at the mouth of the Kushiro River. Administrative center, Kushiro District. Population, 192,000 (1970). It is a fishing fleet base and a timber harbor. More than 4 million tons of goods pass through the port annually. Kushiro has a fish cannery, a fertilizer combine, a shipyard, a sawmill, and cellulose-paper enterprises.

The zoo in the northern city of Kushiro swapped an orangutan for a polar bear cub in January 2005, hoping it would eventually produce offspring with a female bear called Kurumi.
For instance, you can travel to Mount Daisetsu National Park, which is sometimes called The Roof of Hokkaido and gaze in amazement the snow peaked mountain ranges or visit the Kushiro marshland which is home to many adorable marsh dwelling animals including the sacred crane.
