Kutaisi Motor Vehicle Plant

(full name, G. K. Ordzhonikidze Kutaisi Motor Vehicle Plant; KAZ), an enterprise of the USSR’s motor vehicle industry. Located in the city of Kutaisi in the Georgian SSR, the plant produces trailer trains with a load capacity of 11.5 tons, motor vehicle engines, spare parts for motor vehicles, and also hardware for general and household use, including gardening carts and window and door bolts. Construction of the plant began in 1945, and the first truck was delivered in 1951. The trailer trains are manufactured by the production-line method, the trucks and their basic units being assembled on conveyors. Specialized and semiautomatic machines and equipment are used. The production operations in the foundries and forging shops are mechanized. Output was 87 percent greater in 1972 than in 1965. The reconstruction and expansion of the plant is being considered (1975).
