Kuznetsk, Kemerovo Region, Russia: see Novokuznetsk Novokuznetsk , city (1989 pop. 600,000), S central Siberian Russia, on the Tom River. Steel, mining equipment, chemicals, and aluminum are produced. The old town of Kuznetsk was founded by Cossacks in 1617 and was a trading center until the 20th cent.

Kuznetsk 

a city in Penza Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Truev River (a tributary of the Sura). Population, 88,000 (1972, up from 20,000 in 1897 and 38,000 in 1939). The city has a railroad station on the Penza-Syzran’ line. After Penza it is the most important city in the oblast in terms of population and industry. Kuznetsk has a plant making instruments and capacitors, plants building textile machines and polymer machines, an automotive repair plant, and a leather plant. It also has footwear and garment factories, as well as complexes for felt and fur, meat packing, and furniture. There are technicums for electronic instruments, industrial economics and veterinarian training, as well as medical, pedagogical, and music schools and the Radishchev Museum of Local Lore. As a city Kuznetsk originated in 1780 on the site of the village of Naryshkino.
