Kuznetsov, Nikolai Iakovlevich 

Born May 11 (23), 1873, in St. Petersburg; died Apr. 8, 1948, in Leningrad. Soviet entomologist and physiologist.

Kuznetsov graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1895. From 1905 to 1948 he worked at the Zoological Museum (later the Institute of Zoology) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He was also a professor at the Institute of Applied Zoology and Phytopathology (from 1927), at Leningrad State University (from 1931), and at the Leningrad Institute of Agriculture (1934—37). His principal works were devoted to the taxonomy, zoogeography, morphology, ecology, physiology, and paleontology of insects. He conducted a comprehensive study of the Lepidoptera, particulary the Pieridae, of the USSR and the European and Asiatic parts of the arctic. He also studied fossil insects of the Paleogene (in amber). He was the author of Fundamentals of the Physiology of Insects (vols. 1–2, 1948–49). Kuznetsov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
