KwaNdebele

Former Bantustan, central Transvaal province, Republic of South Africa. The government of South Africa designated it as the Bantustan for the Transvaal Ndebele people. Situated northeast of Johannesburg, it was founded in 1979, when many Transvaal Ndebele were expelled from Bophuthatswana. In 1994, after the abolition of apartheid, KwaNdebele became part of the new East Transvaal (now Mpumalanga) province.

Further disruption and relocations occurred during the second half of the twentieth century as a result of apartheid policies and the creation of the homeland KwaNdebele (Courtney-Clarke 1986; Loubser 1991; Berman 1993; Powell 1995; Schneider 1999).
The self-governing territories were KwaZulu, KaNgwane, Gazankulu, Lebowa, KwaNdebele, and Qwaqwa.
In the mid-'70s, the Ndebele, as victims of apartheid's social engineering, were assigned a designated area - KwaNdebele.
