L'Anse aux Meadows |
Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
L'Anse aux MeadowsSite on the northern tip of Newfoundland of the first known European settlements in the New World. Norse settlers may have established as many as three settlements there near the end of the 10th century. After initially fighting each other, the Norse settlers and the Inuit (whom the Norse called Skraeling) established a regular trade relationship. The settlements were soon abandoned, probably as the Norse withdrew from Greenland. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tourists visit L'Anse aux Meadows, site of a Viking settlement, and Gros Morne National Park. They intend to sleep on the open deck and navigate from the sun and stars as they sail along the coast of Greenland, across the Davis Strait and down past Baffin Island and Labrador before ending the approximately 1,900-mile voyage at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, the only confirmed Norse site in North America. Carter and the crew of the Snorri -- named after the first Viking child born in the New World 1,000 years ago -- have navigated for 87 days through the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic, sailing along the coast of Greenland, across the stormy Davis Strait to Baffin Island, and south along the remote coast of Labrador to reach L'Anse aux Meadows. |
