a semifree social level among the Teutonic tribes of the Franks and Saxons, corresponding to the aldies among the Lombards and to the leets among the Anglo-Saxons. They occupied an intermediate status between free communal peasants and slaves. During the formation of feudal relationships, they became included in the emerging class of feudally dependent peasants.
