Lolland or Laaland (both: lô`län), island (1992 pop. 72,536), 479 sq mi (1,241 sq km), SE Denmark, in the Baltic Sea, E of Langeland, S of Sjælland, and W of Falster. The island is low-lying and agricultural; sugar beets are the main crop. The chief cities are Maribo, Sakskøbing, and Nakskov. There are numerous summer resorts on the island's southwest coast.

Area, 1,200 sq km. Lolland is composed of limestones and clays; the predominant relief is morainal plain, with hills in the center and the northwest (elevations to 25 m). In places the island is covered with beech and oak forests. Much of Lolland is cultivated (grains and sugar beets), and there is a dense network of drainage ditches and pipes. Shallow expanses of offshore land have been drained and are protected by dikes. Lolland is linked with Falster Island by a railroad bridge. The main city and port is Nakskov.
