Lom a city in northwestern Bulgaria on the Danube, at the mouth of the Lom River in Mikhailovgrad District. Population, 30,000 (1971). Lom is Bulgaria’s second most important port on the Danube. Machinery building is an important industry as is food processing: Lom produces sugar, meat, and canned foods. The city is the center of a grape-growing and wine-making region. Lom also Rusenski Lom, a river in northern Bulgaria, a right tributary of the Danube. Length, 197 km; basin area, approximately 3,000 sq km. The Lom River rises in the northern spurs of the Balkans (Stara Planina mountain range) and crosses a region of foothills; the lower course flows on the Lower Danube Plain. High water occurs in spring. The city of Ruse is near its mouth. The name Lom is also given to another tributary of the Danube in northwestern Bulgaria. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
