LVDS

Also found in: Acronyms 0.01 sec.

LVDS

(Low Voltage Differential Signaling) A transmission method for sending digital information. LVDS sends data over data high and data low lines rather than data and ground. The receiver detects the voltage difference between the two signals instead of relative to ground.

SCSI and LCD Screens
LVDS is used in SCSI bus signaling to increase cable lengths to 40 feet compared to 20 feet for single-ended signals (data and ground). It is also used to send signals from the motherboard to a laptop LCD screen. In some desktop flat panels, LVDS is used between the image scaler and the panel. See differential signaling, SCSI, TMDS and OpenLDI.

Flat Panel Monitor
This diagram of a typical flat panel monitor shows where LVDS is used as the last interface to the panel itself. (Redrawn from original courtesy of Analog Devices, Inc.)
