Laayoune

 or El Aaiún

City (pop., 2004: 183,691), Western Sahara, North Africa. The capital (1940–76) of the overseas Spanish province of Western Sahara and since 1976 of the Laayoune province of Morocco (though Morocco's claim is not internationally recognized), Laayoune lies in the northern part of Western Sahara, 8 mi (13 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It was developed by Spain in 1938 as the administrative and military centre of the Europeans living in the former province. It is Western Sahara's largest urban centre. Nearby oases supply water.

La'youn, Western Sahara's capital, accounts for 40 per cent of Morocco's total fish catch.
The trouble started when, on 21 May, the authorities transferred Ahmed Mahmoud Hadi, known as 'Kainan'--whom the Moroccans say they are holding for drugs offences and for 'insulting the monarchy' but whom Saharawis see as a prisoner of conscience--from what is known as the Dark Prison in La'youn to a jail near Agadir in Morocco.
