The belief was that La Befana became lost on her way to deliver gifts to the Christ child and began delivering gifts to all youngsters.
IN Italian Christmas tradition, La Befana brings presents on January 6, not on Christmas day (Page 6, December 14).
Equally significant is La Befana, the kindly old witch who brings toys for children on the Feast of Epiphany on January 6.
