Chaux-de-Fonds, La

(lä shō-də-fôN`), city (1990 pop. 36,894), Neuchâtel canton, NW Switzerland, in the Jura Mts., near the French border. It is one of the largest watch-manufacturing centers in Switzerland.

Since the 18th century the city has been the center of watchmaking; it has technical schools to train watchmakers. La Chaux-de-Fonds is the site of a conservatory. There is also tourist industry.
