La Follette, Philip Fox (1897–1965) governor; born in Madison, Wis. (son of Robert Marion La Follette Sr.) A lawyer, he served as governor (Rep., Wis.; 1931–33, Prog., 1935–39), pushing through the first state unemployment insurance plan. He founded the ill-fated National Progressive Party in 1938, losing his own reelection campaign. After serving on General MacArthur's staff, he practiced law, becoming president of Hazeltine electronics (1955–59). How to thank TFD for its existence?
