La Follette, Philip Fox (1897–1965) governor; born in Madison, Wis. (son of Robert Marion La Follette Sr.) A lawyer, he served as governor (Rep., Wis.; 1931–33, Prog., 1935–39), pushing through the first state unemployment insurance plan. He founded the ill-fated National Progressive Party in 1938, losing his own reelection campaign. After serving on General MacArthur's staff, he practiced law, becoming president of Hazeltine electronics (1955–59). |
