La Follette, Robert Marion, Jr. (1895–1953) U.S. senator; born in Madison, Wis. Born into a political family, he was elected to the U.S. Senate (Rep., Wis.; 1925–47) to serve out his father's unexpired term. A staunch liberal, he supported tax reform, social security, farm relief, and foreign aid. He was defeated in the Republican primary in 1946 by Joseph R. McCarthy.
