La Guaira

La Guaira (lä gwī`rä), city (1990 pop. 23,831), capital of Vargas state, N Venezuela, on the Caribbean Sea NW of Caracas. It is the principal international port of Venezuela; cacao, coffee, and tobacco are the chief exports. La Guaira is also a seaside resort. Founded in the 16th cent. as an outlet for Caracas, the city was sacked by English pirates in 1743. During the war for independence (19th cent.), La Guaira's dungeons held many noted political prisoners. The international airport for Caracas is located in nearby Maiquetía.

La Guaira 

a city in northern Venezuela. Population, 24,500 (1969). An important seaport on the Caribbean Sea, La Guaira handles three-fifths of the country’s imports and has an annual turnover of over 1 million tons of goods. The city has railroad and highway connections with Caracas. La Guaira is also a fishing center and a center for the processing of imported raw materials. It was founded in the 16th century.

The ships, including the nuclear-powered cruiser Peter the Great and the destroyer Admiral Chabankenko, arrived at La Guaira, a port near to the capital Caracas, to coincide with a two day visit by Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president.
