La Pérouse Strait (lä pər
z`) or Soya Strait (sō`yä), channel, 25 mi (40 km) wide, separating N Hokkaido island, Japan, from S Sakhalin island, Russia, and connecting the Sea of Japan on the west with the Sea of Okhotsk on the east.La Pérouse Strait the strait between the islands of Sakhalin (USSR) and Hokkaido (Japan), connecting the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk. Width, 43 km at the narrowest point; depth, from 51 to 118 m. There are strong tides. The strait, which is covered withice in the winter, is a waterway between Vladivostok and the ports of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.
