Name Origin: For the once-prominent AZ city of La Paz, an important gold-mining center in the 1860s that eventually was abandoned. Gold had been discovered near the site on Jan 12, 1862, the date on which many Mexican and Mexican-American Catholics in early Arizona celebrated the Feast of our Lady of Peace (in Spanish, Nuestra Senora de la Paz). Area (sq mi): 4513.36 (land 4499.95; water 13.40). Pop per sq mi: 4.50. Pop 2005: 20,238. State rank: 14. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.70%; 1990-2000 42.40%. Pop 2000: 19,715 (White 63.80%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 22.40%; Asian 0.40%; Other 24.70%). Foreign born: 9.70%. Median age: 46.80. Income 2000: per capita $14,916; median household $25,839; Pop below poverty level: 19.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $15,672-$18,653. Unemployment 2004: 6.70%. Change from 2000: 0.40%.
