La Vallée Poussin, Charles Jean de
Born Aug. 14, 1866, in Louvain; died Mar. 2, 1962, in Brussels. Belgian mathematician. Academician of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences, Literature, and Fine Arts and the Paris Academy of Sciences (1945). La Vallée Poussin became a professor at the University of Louvain in 1897. Independently of J. Hadamard he refined results in number theory obtained by P. L. Chebyshev on the asymptotic behavior of the formula π(n) for the number of primes less than or equal to n. La Vallée Poussin derived important results in the theory of trigonometric series (the La Vallée Poussin convergence test), the theory of function approximation, and mathematical physics.
