On the northeastern border of IN, east of Elkhart; organized Feb 2, 1832 from unorganized territory in Elkhart County. Name Origin: For the country home near Paris of the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) who fought with the Americans during the Revolutionary War, from French 'the barn.'
