Laayouneor El AaiúnCity (pop., 2004: 183,691), Western Sahara, North Africa. The capital (1940–76) of the overseas Spanish province of Western Sahara and since 1976 of the Laayoune province of Morocco (though Morocco's claim is not internationally recognized), Laayoune lies in the northern part of Western Sahara, 8 mi (13 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It was developed by Spain in 1938 as the administrative and military centre of the Europeans living in the former province. It is Western Sahara's largest urban centre. Nearby oases supply water. |

The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) resumed the voter identification process on 3 December, beginning at two MINURSO centres at Laayoune and Smara. The five-day race course forms a long oval along the Atlantic coast of Morocco coast from Agadir through Oued Chebika to Laayoune and back to Agadir -- all southwest of the famous cities Casablanca and Marrakesh. |
