Lacépède, Bernard Germain Étienne Delaville

Born Dec. 26,1756, in Agen, Lot-et-Garonne; died Oct. 6, 1825, in Epinay-sur-Seine. French zoologist. Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1795).

In 1794, Lacépède became a professor at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. He studied fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Lacépède continued G. Buffon’s multivolume Histoire naturelle. His descriptions of species were noted for their carefulness and completeness. A believer in the constancy of species, Lecépède acknowledged limited transformation.
