On the southwestern border of MN; organized 1863 north of the Minnesota River, disestablished in 1868, then recreated Mar 6, 1871 south of the river. Name Origin: French 'talking lake,' probably a transliteration of Siouan mde'lake,' iye 'speaks,' and dan, a diminutive suffix. Origin uncertain, but possibly for echoes reflected from surrounding cliffs.

Area (sq mi): 778.05 (land 764.87; water 13.19). Pop per sq mi: 9.90.
Pop 2005: 7,604. State rank: 76. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.70%; 1990-2000 -9.60%. Pop 2000: 8,067 (White 98.70%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.30%; Asian 0.30%; Other 0.70%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 43.40.
Income 2000: per capita $17,399; median household $32,626; Pop below poverty level: 8.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,584-$23,817.
Unemployment 2004: 4.30%. Change from 2000: 0.00%. Median travel time to work: 17.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 26.60%.
