Lachlan

a river in southeastern Australia; a right tributary of the Murrumbidgee (Murray River basin). Length, approximately 1,500 km; basin area, 85,000 sq km.

The Lachlan takes its source on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, north of Canberra. In its upper reaches, it flows into a deep valley and is full of rapids. The lower course flows through a plain and is navigable in the period of summer rains. The average water discharge is 42 cu m per sec. The river is used for irrigation. Although the Lachlan is regulated by a system of reservoirs, there have been catastrophic floods in the river valley.
