Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge Address: 29746 Bird Rd Martin, SD 57551 Phone: 605-685-6508; Web: www.fws.gov/lacreek Established: 1935 as Lacreek Migratory Waterfowl Refuge. Location: 120 miles southeast of Rapid City in southwestern South Dakota. Facilities: Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails, campground, auto tour route. Activities: Boating, canoeing, swimming, water skiing, picnicking, camping, fishing, hunting. Special Features: Average annual refuge production includes 80-100 trumpeter swans. Spring concentrations of 29,000 ducks and 37,000 geese are not uncommon. Habitats: 16,410 acres of native sandhills, sub-irrigated meadows, impounded freshwater marshes, and mixed grass prairie uplands. Access: Open during daylight hours. Wild life: Trumpeter swans, ducks, burrowing owls, prairie dogs, mule and white-tailed deer, pheasant, and occasional whooping cranes. See other parks in South Dakota.
