As a result, researchers are for the first time performing large-scale clinical trials of lactoferrin and lysozyme. Lactoferrin is known for its immuonoregulatory activity and anti-bacterial effect. In fact, a diet high in milk that contains abundant lactoferrin, which chelates dietary iron, has been hypothesized to favor the presence of strains expressing iron-uptake systems (such as aerobactin or enterobactin), which are often encoded by plasmids that also carry resistance genes (29). |
