Dzhanibekov, Vladimir Aleksandrovich
Born May 13, 1942, in the settlement of Iskandar, Bostanlykskii Raion, Tashkent Oblast. Pilot-cosmonaut of the USSR; colonel. Hero of the Soviet Union (1978). Member of the CPSU since 1970. Dzhanibekov graduated from the Eisk Higher Aviation School for Pilots (now named for V. M. Komarov) in 1965 and served as an air force flight instructor. He became a cosmonaut in 1970. Between Jan. 10 and Jan. 16, 1978, Dzhanibekov and O. G. Makarov achieved a linkup of the Soyuz 27 spacecraft and the Salyut 6 space station, which was already docked with the Soyuz 26 spacecraft and was being manned by Iu. V. Romanenko and G. M. Grechko. Dzhanibekov returned to earth aboard Soyuz 26; his total flight time was five days 23 hr. Dzhanibekov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals.
