In southeastern LA, southwest of New Orleans; organized 1807 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Bayou Lafourche, which runs the length of the county; from French 'the fork.'

Area (sq mi): 1472.19 (land 1084.68; water 387.51). Pop per sq mi: 85.00.
Pop 2005: 92,179. State rank: 14. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.50%; 1990-2000 4.80%. Pop 2000: 89,974 (White 82.20%; Black or African American 12.60%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.70%; Other 3.90%). Foreign born: 1.50%. Median age: 34.10.
Income 2000: per capita $15,809; median household $34,910; Pop below poverty level: 16.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,539-$26,847.
