Lajta, Béla

Born Jan. 23, 1873, in Budapest; died Oct. 12, 1920, in Vienna. Hungarian architect.

Lajta graduated from the Technical University in Budapest in 1895. He also studied in Italy, Germany, and other European countries. Early in his career he was a follower of Ö. Lechner and worked in the style of art nouveau. Searching for clear spatial and constructive solutions, Lajta simplified and geometrized forms. Thus, his work evolved toward functionalism. Lajta’s designs in Budapest include the Poor House (1911) and the Rózsavölgyi House (1911–12).
