Kovdozero
(also Kovda, Kovdoozero), a lake in the southern part of Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. Its area with the islands measures 294 sq km (at its natural level). The lake has a complex lobate form and numerous islands (more than 580). The total area of the islands is approximately 70 sq km. The greatest length of the lake is 48 km. The widest part measures 23 km, and the deepest part 56 m. With the construction of the Kniazhaia Guba Hydroelectric Power Plant in 1955, the lake has been turned into a reservoir; the power plant has made possible the partial long-term control of the Kovda River’s runoff. The level of Kovdozero has risen by 6.4 m, and the area has increased to 608 sq km. Many rivers empty into the lake. There are fishing and navigation on the lake as well as the floating of timber.
