Mälaren (mĕ`lärən), lake, c.440 sq mi (1,140 sq km), E central Sweden. Third largest of the Swedish lakes, it extends c.70 mi (110 km) W from Stockholm, which is situated on the strait connecting the lake with the Baltic Sea. The lake's scenic shores and more than 1,000 islands have many villas and historic castles and ruins, notably Skokloster and Gripsholm. There are many important small industrial towns on the lake.

Mälaren

Lake, eastern Sweden. Located just west of Stockholm, it has an area of 440 sq mi (1,140 sq km) and a length of 75 mi (120 km); it is the country's third largest lake. Connected with the Baltic Sea by navigable channels, it has more than 1,200 islands.


Mälaren 

(Lake Malar), a lake in central Sweden. Area, 1,163 sq km (according to other data, 1,140 sq km); length, approximately 120 km. The lake is located in a basin of tectonic and glacial origin, only 0.3 to 0.6 m above sea level. Depth, 60 m (according to other data, 64 m). Lake Malaren has a very complex configuration; there are numerous gulfs, bays, and capes and about 1,200 islands. Channels and canals connect the lake with the Baltic Sea and Lake Hjälmar. The lake is navigable, and tourism featuring water sports is an important industry. Stock-holm lies on the eastern shore of Mälaren. The cities of Köping and Västerås are also located on the lake.
