Lake Manawa State Park Location: 1 mile south of IA 92 in Council Bluffs. Facilities: 72 campsites (@di; 37 with electrical hookups) with modern shower and restroom in campground, open picnic shelters (é), hiking and biking trails, nature trail (é), swimming beach, fishing pier (é), boat ramps, boat rentals, food concession, 660-acre natural lake, playground (é). Activities: Camping, swimming, lake fishing, boating, hiking, bicycling, mountain biking. Special Features: Lake Manawa was formed during a flood in 1881 when a portion of the river channel was cut off by the meandering of the Missouri River. Over the years, the resulting oxbow lake became a major outdoor recreation center. "Manawa" is a Native American term meaning "peace and comfort."
