Lamanov, Ivan Ivanovich 

Born in 1898; died Sept. 13, 1931. Active participant in the struggle against the Basmachi in Middle Asia; frontier guard and hero. Member of the CPSU from 1917. Born in Kharkov Province; son of a poor peasant.

After the February Revolution of 1917, Lamanov commanded a Red Guard detachment. During the Great October Revolution his unit participated in the establishment of Soviet power in Kharkov Province. During the Civil War of 1918–20, Lamanov commanded the 1st Soviet Pecheneg Regiment (later called the 368th Rifle Regiment of the 41st Division) and successfully fought against the White Guard troops of Denikin. In 1922, Lamanov began to serve in the frontier troops. He graduated from the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in 1928. From 1928 to 1931 he was assistant chief of the Directorate of the Frontier Guard and Troops of the Unified State Political Directorate (OGPU) in Middle Asia. In that capacity he directed operations for the liquidation of Basmachi bands. He was killed in a battle with the Basmachi at the Chagyl well in Karakum. Lamanov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and the Honored Chekist Badge.
