Born July 12, 1913, in Los Angeles, Calif. American physicist.

Lamb graduated from the University of California in 1934. From 1938 to 1952 he worked at Columbia University in New York, becoming a professor in 1948. He was a professor at Stanford University from 1951 to 1956 and at Oxford University from 1956 to 1962. In 1962 he was appointed a professor at Yale University.

Between 1947 and 1953, Lamb conducted a series of experiments with co-workers on the study of the fine structure of the levels of hydrogen and deuterium atoms using the magnetic resonance method in atomic beams and discovered a shift between the 2²S_1/2 level and the 2²P_1/2 level (called the Lamb shift). He was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1955. .
