Lampi, Johann Baptist, the Elder
Born Dec. 31, 1751, in Romeno, Southern Tirol; died Feb. 11, 1830, in Vienna. Austrian painter. Lampi studied in Salzburg. Working first in Vienna, he later painted in Verona and Trento from 1773 to 1780, in Warsaw from 1788 to 1791, and in St. Petersburg from 1792 to 1797. He became a professor at the Academy of Arts in Vienna in 1786. Lampi was well known for his formal portraits, which were executed primarily in the classicist style. These works demonstrated virtuosity but were superficial. Lampi’s son and pupil, J. B. Lampi the Younger (1775–1837), worked with him in St. Petersburg and Vienna. REFERENCEFournier-Sarlovèze [J.
