Lanark (lăn`ərk, –ärk), town (1991 pop. 9,778), South Lanarkshire, S central Scotland, on the Clyde River. It has cattle markets and textile mills. There are hydroelectric power stations at the Falls of Clyde, just S of Lanark. Sir William Wallace Wallace, Sir William, 1272?–1305, Scottish soldier and national hero. Robert Owen Owen, Robert, 1771–1858, British social reformer and socialist, pioneer in the cooperative movement. The son of a saddler, he had little formal education but was a zealous reader.
