In southeastern PA, southeast of Harrisburg; organized May 10, 1729 from Chester County. Name Origin: For Lancaster, Lancashire, England, former home of John Wright, a prime figure in the formation of the county.

Area (sq mi): 983.81 (land 949.06; water 34.75). Pop per sq mi: 516.90.
Pop 2005: 490,562. State rank: 6. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.20%; 1990-2000 11.30%. Pop 2000: 470,658 (White 89.30%; Black or African American 2.80%; Hispanic or Latino 5.70%; Asian 1.40%; Other 4.30%). Foreign born: 3.20%. Median age: 36.10.
