Lancelot, king of Naples

Lancelot (lăn`sələt, –lŏt) or Ladislaus (lăd`ĭslôs, –ləs), c.1376–1414, king of Naples (1386–1414), son and successor of Charles III. Almost his entire reign was consumed by his struggle with the Angevin Angevin [Fr.,=of Anjou], name of two medieval dynasties originating in France. The first ruled over parts of France and over Jerusalem and England; the second ruled over parts of France and over Naples, Hungary, and Poland, with a claim to Jerusalem.

). Fortunes shifted repeatedly, but at his death Lancelot was able to transfer his kingdom to his sister, Joanna II. Lancelot occupied Rome several times and in 1413 ordered it sacked.

Lancelot

 or Launcelot

One of the greatest knights in Arthurian legend, the lover of Guinevere and the father of Galahad. He first appeared in a 12th-century romance by Chrétien de Troyes, and he is a major character in Sir Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur. His full name, Sir Lancelot du Lac, refers to his upbringing by the Lady of the Lake, the enchantress who carried him off in infancy and trained him to be a model of chivalry before sending him to Arthur's court. There he became the favorite of King Arthur and the lover of Queen Guinevere. His adultery with Guinevere caused him to fail in the quest for the grail and set in motion the events that led to the destruction of Camelot. He was displaced as the model knight by Galahad, his son by the grailkeeper's daughter Elaine.

The talented Chi Cao danced Lancelot du Lac, moving with an inner elegance and light, soaring elevation.
I see--and hear--in Pickpocket and Lancelot du lac the sort of refined, absolutely pure, distilled expressiveness that I first met-up with in France before it became part of modern Europe; the France of out-of-the-way places like this, in its bars and the mornings when the farmers come in for that first little glass of rouge.
