Lancers

an English ballroom dance. It became widespread in Europe in the mid-19th century. The dance is performed by four couples placed in a crisscross fashion in the set. It consists of five figures. The first, third, and fourth figures are in 6/8 time, and the second and fifth are in 3/4 and 4/4 time. Each figure, except the fifth, begins with a musical introduction (eight bars). In some countries, especially Russia, the dance was popular among the common people. Numerous variants of it have been created in Russian folk dance.
