Lander, Frederick West (1821–62) explorer, soldier; born in Salem, Mass. He studied engineering and led or participated in five transcontinental surveys for transportation routes (1853–60). He was a Union brigadier general of volunteers (1861–62) and he wrote many patriotic poems during the Civil War.
