Originally encompassed a third of the state and was called "Great East" and later "mother of counties." Name Origin: For Gen. Frederick William Lander (1822-62), Union army officer, surveyor, and Indian agent. Area (sq mi): 5519.47 (land 5493.63; water 25.84). Pop per sq mi: 0.90. Pop 2005: 5,114. State rank: 12. Pop change: 2000-20005 -11.70%; 1990-2000 -7.50%. Pop 2000: 5,794 (White 75.70%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 18.50%; Asian 0.30%; Other 15.00%). Foreign born: 9.60%.
