Landsat

 officially Earth Resources Technology Satellites

Any of a series of unmanned U.S. scientific satellites. The first three were launched in 1972, 1975, and 1978. They were designed mainly to collect information about Earth's natural resources. They were also equipped to monitor atmospheric and oceanic conditions and to detect variations in pollution levels and other ecological changes. Three more Landsat satellites were launched successfully, in 1982, 1984, and 1999; radio communication with Landsat 6 was lost immediately after its launch in 1993.

We obtained images from August 1982 (MSS, 60 m resolution) and September 1999 (TM, 30 m resolution) through the University of Maryland's Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF), as part of the collection of orthorectified images housed at GLCF (NASA Landsat Program 1982 and 1999).
For example, Brazil was the third country to participate in the US LANDSAT program and is the third largest user of US-provided satellite imagery.
Like an orphaned child shuttled from one set of foster parents to another, the Landsat program has suffered for lack of a stable home.
