Lane, Henry (Smith) (1811–81) U.S. representative/senator; born in Sharpsburg, Ky. A Whig appointee from Indiana, he served in Congress (1840–43), then left to fight in the Mexican-American war. Joining the Republican Party in support of its antislavery policy, he championed the candidacy of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. He was a one-term senator (1861–67) who returned to being a banker and Republican Party activist in Indiana. How to thank TFD for its existence?
