Lane, William Preston, Jr. (1892–1967) governor; born in Hagerstown, Md. A lawyer and World War I veteran, he purchased newspapers in Hagerstown in 1922. A crusading Maryland attorney general (1930–34), he prosecuted a white lynch mob in 1933. As governor (Dem., 1947–51), he outlawed Communist Party gatherings.
