Laney, Lucy Craft (1854–1933) educator; born in Macon, Ga. Her parents were independent-minded slaves who purchased their freedom. After graduating from Atlanta University (1873), Laney founded the ground-breaking Haines Normal and Industrial Institute in Augusta for African-American children.
