Lange, Oktavii Konstantinovich 

Born Mar. 2 (14), 1883, in the village of Karabchievtsy, in present-day Khmel’nitskii Oblast, Ukrainian SSR; died Dec. 3, 1975, in Moscow. Soviet hydrogeologist. Honored Scientist of the Uzbek SSR (1936); doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1940).

Lange graduated from Moscow University in 1910 and became a professor there in 1926. He organized and headed the subdepartments of hydrogeology at the Moscow Mining Academy (1920–23), the Moscow Hydrometeorological Institute (1930–35), Middle Asian University (1926–30), Moscow University (1953–64), and the Middle Asian Industrial Institute (1930–40). He was director of the subdepartment of dynamic geology of Moscow State University from 1943 to 1953.

Lange studied the underground waters of Bessarabia (1915–16), Middle Asia (1924–49), and other regions. His major works are concerned with the classification of underground waters and with the study of their zoning, dynamics, and behavior. He was the author of textbooks for higher educational institutions on general geology and hydrogeology. Lange was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
