Langlois, Charles Victor 

Born May 26, 1863, in Rouen; died June 25, 1929, in Paris. French historian and medievalist. Member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (1917). Professor of medieval history and of paleography at the Sorbonne. Director of the National Archives (1912).

Langlois devoted his principal works to the French Middle Ages, mainly to the 13th century, to historical bibliography, and to the methodology of history. In An Introduction to the Study of History (Russian translation, 1899), Langlois and C. Seignobos set forth rules for source criticism which have retained their importance to the present day. Langlois contributed to the organization of archives in France.
