Lapitskii, Iosif Mikhailovich

Lapitskii, Iosif Mikhailovich 

(pseudonym, I. M. Mikhailov). Born Jan. 16 (28), 1876, in Minsk; died Nov. 5, 1944, in Moscow. Soviet opera director; Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1936).

Lapitskii was a director at the Solodovnikov Opera House in Moscow from 1903 to 1906 and at the Bolshoi from 1906 to 1908. He was founder, artistic supervisor, and director of the Theater of Musical Drama (St. Petersburg, 1912–19), which played a significant role in the development of opera. From 1919, Lapitskii worked in Moscow and Leningrad and helped to organize opera houses in Kiev (1926) and Donetsk (1941).
