Lappi
a lääni (administrative unit) in northern Finland. Area, 93,900 sq km. Population, 196,000 (1971). The administrative center is the city of Rovaniemi. The region has mostly hilly plains and uplands, with Manselkä being the highest upland. There is a dense network of rivers and many lakes, of which the largest is Lake Inari. The landscape is northern taiga. Lappi is a sparsely populated and economically poorly developed region of the country. The timber industry is a leading branch of the economy, and there are centers of dairy cattle-raising and farming. A hydroelectric power system is located on the Kemijoki.
