Larache (läräsh`), Arab. Al Araish, city (1994 pop. 98,755), N Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. Vegetables, cork, wool, and timber are exported. The Phoenicians founded a trading post on the site, which was later captured by the Romans and called Lixus. Spain held the city twice (1610–91 and 1911–56).
Larache 

(el-Araish), a city in Morocco, on the Atlantic coast, in the province of Tetouan, on a highway. Population, approximately 40,000 (1970). The city is a fishing port, a railroad station, and a trade and industrial center. Larache produces canned fish and textile goods; woodworking and ship repair are industries in the city. The ruins of the ancient Phoenician settlement Lixus are nearby.
